PR: Chiharu Shiota to exhibit at KODE this fall
The Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota will exhibit in Bergen this fall.
Shiota is internationally famous for her intricate and spectacular works using thread that fill entire rooms. Her exhibition will open on the 27th of October in KODE 2. Among other things she will create a site-specific work in thread for one of the newly refurbished galleries in the building.
– Shiota is an exceptional artist who has represented Japan at the 2015 Venice Biennale. Her works in thread combine particular spiritual reflections with direct physical experiences and architecture. In Bergen she will create a unique work for what will be a new room in KODE 2. She will take possession of and interpret the building in her own distinct artistic language. We are really looking forward to it, says KODE director Karin Hindsbo.
Shiota’s intricate works in thread have been described as “drawing in the air”, and often include everyday objects such as boats, beds and keys. She also makes use of photographs and videos in many of her installations.
About the artist:
Chiharu Shiota (b. 1972) was educated in Japan and Germany. In Germany she studied with Marina Abramović. Shiota has lived and worked in Berlin since 1996.
Shiota has exhibited in museums all over the world, amongst others MoMA PS1, New York (2003), La Maison Rouge, Paris (2011) and Kunstsammlung Nordrheinwestfalen, K21, Düsseldorf (2015).
In 2015 she also represented Japan at the Venice Biennale, and attracted considerable attention for her work “The Key in the Hand”.
In addition to installations Shiota works with performance, stage sets, and has collaborated with composers and choreographers.
