KODE contemporary - I!

In the exhibition eleven contemporary artists demonstrate how fragments of human life can be portrayed.

Families and various social groups influence the development of our self-esteem and identity. Identity and subjectivity are also linked to language and are formed in a cultural context. These conditions are the sum of many factors that make up a person’s identity.

How then are we formed as individuals in contact with our surroundings? How do we relate to others, to society; and how do we wish to appear to others? Who are we, and how and why have we become the way we are? Do human beings have a constant and fixed inner essence, or are we made up of many different layers of shifting identities?

The range of styles in the selected artworks is extensive. An elderly man with a cane; a life lived. A self-aware young woman placed in an exclusive interior who stares at us. Finnish bachelors photographed in their small rundown homes in rural Northern Finland. A series of portraits of schoolgirls in Japan. Scenarios played out in a train by young people who are traveling through an unidentified urban landscape somewhere on the Continent. A dysfunctional bunk bed whose beds are mirroring each other. Images of wrenches embroidered on an ironing board. All of these portraits, objects and scenes deal with human beings and their experiences, references and relationships; to themselves, their bodies, their gender and the world they live in.

The works are from KODE’s collection.
