Soft Monuments

Monumental Textile Art from KODE’s Collections.

For one hundred years Norwegian textile art has distinguished itself through its outstanding quality and great variations in motifs and material usage. The craft medium flourished during the early 1900s, and immediately gained a large public. From the 1950s onward the development of textile art was extensive and tumultuous. Pioneering works merged with age-old traditions, and a whole new landscape of styles and possibilities emerged. Parallel to this development, and intimately interwoven with it, was the women’s liberation movement, which transformed women’s position in society.

KODE’s collections encompass an abundance of textile art, many of which have never been shown before. With the exhibition Soft Monuments we wish to highlight a number of the collection’s most monumental textile works – all created by women artists during the past twenty-five years. It is high time we give this works the position they deserves – in the exhibition room, in art history, and for the enjoyment of the public.

In Soft Monuments we find works by Eva Kun, Elsebet Rahlff, Beret Aksnes, Kari Dyrdal, Bjørg Nedrebø, Kathrine Giæver, Gro Jessen, Freidis Einarsen, Sissel Calmeyer, Åse Ljones, Hildegunn Anda, May Bente Aronsen, Astrid Løvaas & Kirsten Wagle, Marit Helen Akslen, Inger Johanne Rasmussen, Sidsel Palmstrøm, Bente Sætrang, Gunvor Nervold Antonsen, Kari Hjertholm, Kari Steihaug, Hege Moen, Anne-Gry Løland, Sissel Blystad, Gitte Magnus, Ida Carolyn Helland-Hansen, Mari Meen Halsøy, Hanne Friis and Marit Justine Haugen.
