Rolf Aamot. Maximal Information per Time Unit!
Rolf Aamot is the ‘unknown’ pioneer of Norwegian electronic art. His works are stories about our modern information society, as told from its threshold.
Aamot (b. 1934) developed what he called ‘visual music’ in the 1960s. It was spawned from his experiences with abstract painting, in combination with new technology and his interest in psychology and mental processes. Particularly important was the introduction of television and the new artistic possibilities it afforded. From early on, his artistic practice turned into a kind of research project, an opportunity to explore the interplay between the power of visual media and art’s autonomy: What should art’s task be in ‘the electronic age’, a time when the world is sensed in new ways and the interface between the world and technology seems boundless?
The exhibition «Maximal Information per Time Unit!» resents selected works that trace the development of Aamot’s ideals and visions up to our modern era, with its streams of information that are more complex than ever before. It also raises questions about art’s political potential, communicative abilities and the conception of art as research.
