The "Golden Age" of Norwegian art
Rasmus Meyer passed away in 1916. His children then donated their father’s collection of art and historical furniture to the city of Bergen.
Today, as part of KODE, the donation comprises one of the finest collections of art from the Norwegian "golden age" (1880–1905).
The beautiful museum building enables you to have a delightful wander through historical interiors from Bergen, plus to experience highlights from the careers of artists such as J.C. Dahl, Hans Gude, Christian Krohg, Harriet Backer, Kitty Kielland, Erik Werenskiold and Gerhard Munthe.
At display in 2022: Ole Bull's violins
The violinist and composer Ole Bull (1810–1880) is regarded as one of Norway’s first superstars. Bull was born in Bergen and quickly achieved an international career as a musician. During his lifetime, he was one of the most well-travelled and famous Norwegians in the world. He was also a nation-builder, entrepreneur, inventor, and constructor.
Ole Bulls violins are the closest we can get to the man today and his Gaspar da Salò is among the most beautiful musical instruments in the world. In addition to this treasure the exhibition shows three other violins owned by Ole Bull. Through the lenses of these instruments we want to shed light on Ole Bulls life and artistry, and his impact on creating a new sense of selfconfidence in the Norwegian nation.
The Munch Collection
KODE holds the world´s third largest collection of Edvard Munch. It is a permanent exhibition presented at KODE 3. As one of the first collectors of Edvard Munch’s art, Rasmus Meyer purchased chief works from all periods of Munch’s oeuvre.
Right now, parts of the Munch collection is on preservation. There will still be masterpieces by Munch on display, but the selection will vary throughout the year.
Permanent Exhibition
The Rasmus Meyer Collection is a permanent exhibition at KODE 3.
The building opened in 1924. It was designed by architect Ole Landmark to house the extensive art gift donated in 1916 to the City of Bergen by businessman and art collector Rasmus Meyer.
