Nikolai Astrup

Nikolai Astrup (1880–1928) is one of Norway’s most beloved artists.

He has held an undisputed position in Norwegian art history ever since his first exhibition in 1905 – the year Norway gained independence from Sweden. Astrup’s fame stems largely from his unique depictions of the lush landscape and traditional way of life in Western Norway. Together with Edvard Munch, he is considered an innovator of the woodcut medium in Norway.

The exhibition presents numerous paintings, prints and drawings.

In 2016 a large collection of these unique works will be sent to Dulwich Picture Gallery in London, Kunsthalle Emden in Germany and Henie Onstad Kunstsenter in Oslo, to be highlighted for the first time in a large international exhibition, named Painting Norway. Nikolai Astrup 1880-1928. While much of the collection is on tour, KODE opens the exhibition «Nikolai Astrup – The Way Home» in Bergen, focusing on Astrup’s early works.
