Lars Hertervig – Works from the collection

Lars Hertervig (1830–1902) is a major figure in the history of Norwegian art, a landscape painter whose work inspires admiration and wonder. A small selection of works on paper by Hertervig is now at display in KODE 3. 

In the years 1851–54, Hertervig studied under Hans Gude in Düsseldorf, where he was introduced to romantic landscape painting. Hertervig developed an idiom that was unusually personal and which allowed a fresh interpretation of the world. His studies were interrupted by mental illness, and he was diagnosed as suffering from what was known in those days as melancholy. As a result, for many years his late work was regarded as fanciful, introspective and remote from reality.

Today many see his pictures not as a product of mental disorder, but rather as an expression of a new artistic perspective on nature and the world, one that also reflects the Quaker belief in Inner Light. Hertervig’s art captures a highly personal experience of form and colour. It has an element of expressionism that links him to early modernism in Norwegian and European painting.

This small exhibition presents 22 works on paper by Hertevig from KODE's collection.
