A Journey into the Classics

The artists presented in this exhibition are among the great masters of the decisive art historical centuries between 1500 and 1800.

Tintoretto, Carracci, Cesari, Allaert van Everdingen and Simon Vouet are among the 23 great artists included in A Journey into the Classics. Italy, France and The Netherlands were each in their own way leading centres within the movements of Mannerism, the Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassicism, and you can view some of the best works from these periods.

The present selection represents the most significant types of motifs for the respective periods, such as historical painting, religious and mythological themes, genre painting and street life, as well and landscapes, still lifes and portraits. Here we can easily become enraptured by both the subject matter of the paintings and by their masterful execution. The paintings are on loan from the Fine Arts Museum in Caen and the exhibition is a rare opportunity to see these great gems of art history.
