HM QUEEN SONJA: UNDERWAY
KODE 1, the former Permanenten, reopens on 23 May 2017. On the programme is a new exhibition featuring Queen Sonja’s art.
On 23 May, KODE 1 reopens to the public. At the same time, we present a new exhibition with HM Queen Sonja of Norway. The exhibition tells a story about the meaning of art in people’s lives, in particular, in the life of Queen Sonja. The exhibition is also an artistic marking of her 80th birthday.
Queen Sonja has had a passion for art and culture throughout most of her life. In her official assignments the Queen has been an enthusiastic promoter of Norwegian art and design. As a collector she has been a great supporter of both visual art and crafts. Since the 1990s Her Majesty has also consistently produced her own works, chiefly in the fields of printmaking and ceramics. She also has several historical ties to KODE 1. She was, among other things, present at the opening of the exhibition Sølvskatten (The Silver Treasure) in 2009 and the exhibition Slottsskatter (Palace Treasures) in 2012.
About the exhibtion
The exhibition “Underway” is HM Queen Sonja’s first solo exhibition in a large museum and includes both graphic artworks in various techniques and newly created ceramic works. She works in an abstract idiom, directly onto the printing plate. The motifs are developed and abstracted in the graphic workshop, a place for experimenting with new possibilities. The main interest lies in examining the effects of colour, texture and light. An ongoing exploration in which Her Majesty continues to be “Underway”.
The exhibition also includes a selection from the Queen’s collection of sculpture and craft.
The exhibition Underveis (Underway) opens on 23 May 2017 and is produced and curated through collaboration between KODE and the Royal House of Norway.
A magnificent building reopens
KODE 1, formerly called Permanenten, is KODE’s building for fine craft and design. In the last two years, this building from 1896 has undergone comprehensive rehabilitation: both the building and the collections are more accessible to the public. For the opening on 23 May, the exhibition Sølvskatten (The Silver Treasure) – KODE’s permanent exhibition of silver and gold objects produced in Bergen – will reopen to the public. So also the Singer Collection, which consists of European and Asiatic antiques, paintings and works by Old Masters. The building will also have a new museum shop focusing on design and interior architecture, a new restaurant, a new education room for children, and a combined conference-and-banquet hall. Later in 2017, the China Collection and new exhibitions of fine craft and design will open.
